Archery club, anyone?

Despite a horrendous nor’wester, later to be replaced with a freezing southeasterly wind, between 100 and 150 keen folk turned up to have a go at target archery at Lansdowne Park, Blenheim the other week.

Archery Open Day 2015 (3)We had 4 targets set up, one about 10 metres further back than the others. Glenn Holmes from Two Arrows Archery in Nelson came over to assist and to show off his beautifully crafted horse bows (interestingly, made from a type of PVC pipe).

The youngest archer would have been about 7 years old and the oldest well into their 70s. Longbows, horse bows and recurve bows of draw weights less than 30 lbs were the weapons of choice. We also had some experienced archers loose a few arrows – amongst them Haydn Cain and Damian Doyle who assisted the newbies and to whom we say a big “thank you”.

Archery Open Day 2015 (2)The general idea of holding a free-for-entry open day was to gauge the interest in starting up an archery club here in Marlborough. Numbers say there is enough interest, so we’ve emailed all the attendees to get some feedback and are hoping we’ll get a band of merry men and women together who will want to be a part of running an archery club. It would be quite an undertaking – with a venue to sort out, equipment to source, a constitution and general rules to iron out, and more besides.

We’d love to hear from any others who couldn’t make it to the open day but who might be interested in an archery club in Marlborough – just drop Hamish an email on info@archeryplus.co.nz.

And watch this space!
