Creative ways to destroy an arrow!
We think of arrows as inflicting damage on whatever they hit – but sometimes it is the arrow that takes the beating!
This is what happens when a carbon arrow hits something solid:
In this instance we had a netting bag of $2 coins suspended from a string on a target face. Using a 45lb Ragim take-down recurve, resident archer Hamish shot at the bag from about 22 metres – not expecting to hit it, but he managed to hit one of the coins, right on the back of our Sovereign’s head. Thinking on it, he was a little worried it might get him into trouble! Regardless, the coin was severely dented and the point of the arrow was pushed back into the shaft, plus the nock was displaced and lost.

On another occasion Hamish was using a 35lb competition recurve bow, at a distance of 35 metres. He missed his intended target face (because he’d not set the sight up correctly) and instead, hit a steel warratah supporting the target buttress. Again, another $40 down the drain 🙁
Even the best of archers have an off day – or an arrow that is determined to follow it’s own path!
