The archer’s paradox

Straight as an arrow? I don’t think so. Did you know an arrow actually flexes and curves as it flies through the air?

Ideally an arrow would fly straight to the target but as there’s a bow in the way, around which the arrow curves as it is fired, this movement has to be taken into account by the archer. The “archer’s paradox” is to aim the arrow to take this flexing into account, and still hit the target. So the flex in an arrow is extremely important, and knowing how much flex an arrow has is important to the archer.

To find out more, watch this fascinating insight into the science behind an arrow’s actual trajectory through the air, and how the archer works around it.
